Management Development: Managing Difficult Conversations

Overview

This session helps people approach sensitive issues with confidence and empathy. It tackles why we avoid difficult conversations, what makes them feel hard, and how to use simple frameworks to prepare and handle them well.

It’s a highly practical session with scenario-based preparation and confidence-building tools.

Who this workshop is for

This session is particularly useful if you:

  • delay difficult conversations because you don’t want conflict
  • worry about getting emotional or making it worse
  • want a clear structure to plan what to say and how to say it
  • want to address behaviour or performance issues earlier

What you'll focus on

  • What is a “difficult conversation” (and what it isn’t)
  • Why we avoid them (and the cost of avoidance)
  • Simple frameworks for preparation and structure
  • Scenario activity: planning a difficult conversation
  • Moving towards clarity, change and agreement

What you'll leave with

  • A clear structure to plan and hold difficult conversations
  • Increased confidence and reduced avoidance
  • Practical prompt questions and language
  • A more collaborative approach to problem solving around behaviour

How it works

Participants work through examples and scenarios in a supportive way, with options to practise privately, in pairs, or as a group (depending on comfort). The focus is on preparation and calm clarity, not confrontation.

Adapting the session

This session is tailored to the context, challenges and experience level of the group. The outline above gives a sense of the core themes, while examples, activities and emphasis are adapted to meet your organisation's needs.

What participants say

  • “It was valuable to leave with a clear framework and have the chance to discuss it properly.”
  • “I found it helpful to understand how and why we avoid conflict — it changed how I think about difficult conversations.”
  • “The interactive elements were really helpful for grounding the learning in reality.”
  • “It helped me look at situations differently and feel less afraid of difficult conversations.”
  • “A key takeaway was that preparation makes difficult conversations more effective and calmer.”
  • “The model gave a way to hold frank, well-structured conversations without making things personal.”
  • “A key takeaway was addressing small issues early rather than waiting for them to build up.”
