Leading a church is one of the most complex people management roles there is

You care deeply about your congregation and often know many of them personally. To carry pastoral responsibility, church vision and organisational leadership, creates a unique pressure to few people understand.

And yet, when it comes to managing paid staff, navigating employment law, handling a difficult conversation with a volunteer or responding to an HR concern, most church leaders have had no formal preparation at all.

That is where we come in.

Cornerstone Resources is a specialist HR consultancy trusted by churches across the UK. We provide outsourced HR support and leadership training that is practical, grounded in real situations and designed to help you lead with clarity and confidence.

Because people matter.

We highly recommend using Cornerstone Resources HR Consultancy. Having used them for nearly two years, we always value the approach and expertise they bring and their investment in understanding the needs of our organisation to offer a bespoke and tailored service.

How we support churches

We work with church leaders, operations managers and trustees across two core service pillars.

Service pillar 1

Outsourced HR for churches

Supporting you with the full employee lifecycle from recruitment to retirement.

Our outsourced HR service gives you access to experienced HR consultants who are also Christians and serving members of their own local churches, available when you need them, without the cost of an in-house HR function.

We support churches with:

  • Employment contracts, policies and handbooks that meet current UK employment law
  • Recruitment and induction for paid and volunteer staff roles
  • Managing performance, sickness absence and capability processes
  • Handling disciplinary matters, grievances and investigations with pastoral care and legal compliance
  • Redundancy, restructure and change management

We work with churches on a retained monthly basis or as a fixed-fee project, depending on your needs.

Service pillar 2

Leadership training for church leaders

Most people step into church leadership because of their calling and faith in Jesus. However, very few receive formal training in how to manage people well.

Our leadership training programmes are designed to fill that gap. We deliver practical, evidence-based training that equips church leaders to lead their teams and volunteers with confidence, clarity and compassion.

Our workshops cover areas including:

  • Leading with clarity, accountability and trust
  • Managing difficult conversations professionally
  • Building psychological safety within your team
  • Supporting wellbeing while maintaining clear expectations
  • Sexual harassment prevention and awareness
  • Diversity, equity and inclusion in a church context

Sessions are delivered in-person or live online and can be tailored to your church or leadership team's specific context and priorities.

“This is a genuinely impactful course which had a profound effect on my understanding of how to lead effectively whilst being authentic and true to my values. The balance of theory and practical work was perfect and the course delivery was engaging and inspiring too.”

Why churches choose Cornerstone Resources

We understand that a church is not a corporate business. Your staff team may sit alongside your congregation. Your volunteers give their time out of commitment to something they believe in. Your leadership carries spiritual weight as well as organisational responsibility.

That is exactly why we approach church HR and leadership work the way we do: with honesty, care and the kind of pragmatic advice that reflects the realities of ministry life, not just employment law textbooks.

We are rated five stars on Google and Trustpilot and are trusted to work with churches across the UK.

Your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Yes. If your church employs paid staff, you have the same legal obligations as any other employer under UK employment law. This includes issuing written employment contracts, following a fair dismissal process, managing sickness absence correctly and complying with legislation such as the Employment Rights Act, the Equality Act 2010 and the Worker Protection Act 2023. Many churches are also registered charities, which adds an additional layer of governance and compliance responsibility. Getting this right protects your church, your staff and your trustees.

In short, a volunteer is someone who gives their time freely with no contractual obligation and no expectation of financial reward beyond genuine out-of-pocket expenses. A paid employee, however, has a formal employment relationship and carries full employment rights from day one of their employment. The distinction matters because misclassifying someone, for example treating a paid worker as a volunteer, can create significant legal exposure for your church. We can help you get this right from the outset.

At minimum, every church employing paid staff should have a disciplinary and grievance procedure, an equality and diversity policy, a sickness absence policy and a health and safety policy. Beyond these essentials, we recommend churches also consider a safeguarding policy (if not already covered separately), a flexible working policy and a code of conduct that reflects the values and expectations of your organisation. We can review what you currently have in place and help you fill any gaps.

This is one of the most genuinely unique challenges in church HR and one that secular HR guidance rarely addresses well. When a paid staff member is also part of your congregation, the line between the pastoral relationship and the employment relationship can become blurred, and that creates real risk for both parties. We advise church leaders on how to maintain appropriate boundaries, document conversations and decisions clearly and approach difficult situations in a way that is both legally sound and relationally sensitive.

Yes. We offer both retained monthly HR partnerships and fixed-fee project support, so you can choose the arrangement that suits your church's size, budget and needs. Many smaller churches start with a fixed-fee piece of work, such as a policy review or support with a specific HR issue, before moving to a retained arrangement as their confidence in the partnership grows. We are happy to discuss what works best for you.

On a retained basis, you have access to our HR consultants as and when you need them, up to a set number of hours per month. You can use that time for advice calls, document drafting, policy reviews, support with a disciplinary process or anything else that falls within the scope of people management. Many of our church clients find that having this ongoing relationship means issues are addressed early, before they escalate. Retained clients also benefit from priority response times and a 20% discount on our leadership training programmes.

Yes. The church leadership edition of Lead with Confidence is designed for anyone leading people in a church context, whether that is a senior pastor, an associate minister, a heads of ministry team, an operations manager or a volunteer team leader. The programme explicitly addresses the dynamics of leading volunteers as well as paid staff and is built around real church leadership scenarios rather than generic management theory.

Yes. We work with churches across a wide range of denominations and traditions, including Anglican, Baptist, Pentecostal, independent evangelical and other Christian traditions. Our approach is grounded in professional HR practice and genuine respect for your faith context, and we do not bring a denominationally specific perspective to our work. Our trainer Joe Husbands is a practising Christian and member of the Evangelical Alliance, which reflects our wider commitment to serving the church community with integrity.

For retained clients, we aim to respond to calls and emails within the same working day. For new enquiries, we will always aim to come back to you within one working day and can typically arrange an initial call within 48 hours. If you are facing an urgent situation, please say so when you get in touch and we will do our best to prioritise your enquiry accordingly.

We are based in Stockport, Cheshire, but we work with churches across the UK. Our HR consultancy and leadership training can be delivered remotely, and we have clients in various regions. Where in-person support or training delivery is required, we can discuss travel and any associated costs transparently.
