Management Development: Leadership Essentials: Core Skills for Managers (Half Day)

Overview

This half-day session focuses on the core responsibilities of management, supporting managers to set clear objectives, run purposeful 1:1s, and hold performance-focused conversations. It builds confidence in managing performance day to day while empowering team members to take ownership and think critically. It’s practical, fast-moving and grounded in real scenarios — giving managers clear tools they can apply immediately.

Who this workshop is for

This session is ideal if you:

  • are new to managing people, or stepping up into leadership responsibility
  • have managed for a while but want a practical refresher on the fundamentals
  • want more confidence with feedback, performance conversations, and difficult discussions
  • want to build a psychologically safe culture with clear standards and accountability

It can also be useful for employees and aspiring leaders who want to understand what good management looks like behind the scenes.

What you'll focus on

Purpose, mindset & your leadership brand

  • What it means to lead (beyond just “getting things done”)
  • How your leadership style lands with others
  • Being intentional about the leader you want to be

Empowering your team through intent-based leadership

  • Creating ownership rather than dependency
  • Helping people think critically and problem-solve
  • Delegation that develops capability (not just offloading tasks)

Building a climate of trust and accountability

  • What psychological safety is (and what it isn’t)
  • Behaviours that build trust in everyday moments
  • Balancing challenge and support

Conversations that drive performance

  • Feedback that is clear, constructive and respectful
  • Handling pushback or emotional reactions with care
  • Simple structures for difficult conversations

What you'll leave with

  • A clearer understanding of their role and day-to-day leadership responsibilities
  • Practical frameworks for 1:1s, delegation, feedback, and difficult conversations
  • More confidence setting expectations and addressing issues earlier
  • Actions to strengthen team culture, trust and accountability

How it works

The session blends short teaching inputs with reflection, discussion and practical application. Participants are encouraged to bring real situations (where appropriate), so tools and models are applied to what’s actually happening in the workplace. There are opportunities to learn from others’ perspectives and share approaches in a structured, supportive way.

Adapting the session

This session is tailored to the context, challenges and experience level of the group. The outline above gives a sense of the core themes, while examples, activities and emphasis are adapted to meet your organisation's needs.
