Workplace investigations and disciplinaries: practical training for managers

Investigations and disciplinary processes are among the most challenging situations a manager faces. This two-hour practical online session gives managers the confidence and clarity to approach them fairly, consistently and in line with the ACAS Code of Practice, working effectively alongside HR throughout.

Why this matters

Training that gives managers the confidence to get it right

Most managers will face a conduct or performance concern at some point in their careers. The challenge isn't usually understanding the policy. It's knowing how to apply it fairly and consistently in situations that rarely follow a neat script.

When investigations and disciplinaries are handled well, they protect everyone involved. The employee gets a fair hearing. The organisation is protected from legal challenge. And the manager can navigate a difficult situation with their integrity and working relationships intact.

When they go wrong, the consequences can be significant. Procedural errors, unfair outcomes and costly employment tribunal claims are a real risk when managers don't have a clear picture of what a fair process looks like. Employment judges consider the ACAS Code of Practice on Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures as the benchmark, and they take a dim view of processes that fall short of it.

Good training doesn't turn managers into HR specialists. It gives them the grounding to recognise what fair looks like, understand when to involve HR and how to approach difficult conversations with the right combination of confidence, clarity and care.

Managing investigations & disciplinaries

Open session price: £595+VAT per organisation

Client hours usage: 6 hours (business) / 8 hours (charity/church)

Overview

This practical two-hour session is designed for managers who deal with people issues in their teams. Rather than focusing on legal definitions or policy terminology, it takes a real-world approach to managing concerns appropriately, understanding when formal action may be needed and how to work effectively alongside HR throughout.

The session includes realistic workplace scenarios, discussion activities and practical examples to help bring the learning to life in a way that feels relevant and immediately applicable.

It's open to participants from a range of organisations and sectors, which creates a valuable environment for managers to hear different approaches, share real experiences and recognise that these situations are challenging for everyone, not just them.

Who this is for

This session is suitable for you if you're:

  • A line manager, team leader or supervisor dealing with day-to-day people issues
  • An operational manager responsible for managing conduct or performance in your team
  • Someone stepping into a people management role who wants to understand formal processes
  • A manager who has handled an investigation or disciplinary before but wants to feel more confident and consistent when doing so

No specialist HR knowledge is required.

Recommendation

We recommend organisations send all line managers, not just those dealing with an active issue. Building consistent knowledge across your management team reduces risk and builds confidence before problems arise.

  • Common investigation pitfalls and how to avoid them
  • When issues move into a disciplinary process

  • Practical workplace scenarios and group discussion throughout

After this session, you'll be better equipped to:
