May 2023. Cornerstone Resources have become supporters of the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter. The Charter’s aims are to improve working practices across Greater Manchester. As an ethical HR Consultancy, we feel we can wholeheartedly get behind this. Not only do we demonstrate the 7 charter aims in how we work but we can help your organisation do the same.
What are the 7 Good Employment Charter aims?
The 7 Good Employment Charter aims are as follows:
1) Extending Secure Work
By providing clarity over working hours, we want to end insecure employment wherever possible. If you use zero hours contracts, but your employees work regular hours, why not convert them into guaranteed minimum hours contracts? This way, your employees can more readily plan their finances and secure mortgage or rental offers. You also get a more loyal, committed workforce.
2) Extending Flexible Work
Flexible working is a key element of the Good Employment Charter. This includes being adaptable in both the location that work is completed in and also the pattern of work that is completed. By doing so, you can tap into a more diverse talent pool, something that is critical in today’s tight labour market. It also makes sound business sense. By trusting and empowering your team to deliver, you will get a higher performing workforce. Balancing home and work commitments is difficult so why make it harder unless you absolutely have to?
3) Pay
In today’s tough economic climate, paying people well can be difficult. Competing demands on limited finances can lead to a temptation to scrimp on wages. But if you aren’t paying your team well, will you get the best out of them? With household income also feeling the pinch, keeping salaries low will increase stress and inhibit performance. We commit to paying living wages at Cornerstone and helping our customers provide real value through their salaries and benefits packages.
4) Improving Workplace Engagement & Voice
Even if you are not unionised, it makes sense to listen to your team’s views. Whilst an employee forum might not work for you, regular engagement surveys, a suggestions box and regular feedback can help you to understand what is important to your team and make a real difference to the working environment. You may even see productivity gains if employees feel empowered to make changes that help them do their jobs better.
5) Developing Excellent Recruitment Practices
Poor recruitment costs you. By training your managers on how to recruit effectively and by having a robust recruitment process that is applied consistently, you will get better results from your recruitment. We can help you both with your recruitment needs and in training your managers on how to recruit.
6) Fostering Employee Health & Wellbeing
Employee Health and Wellbeing has never been higher on the business agenda. Whether you are thinking of getting an Employee Assistance Programme, encouraging volunteering or even walking meetings, any step you take to improve health and wellbeing will pay dividends.
7) People Management
Good people management, whether it be rewarding great performance, training your team, setting clear objectives etc is critical for any employer. Our expert HR advice can help you improve how your people are managed. We’ve established a series of training webinars that will give you some great takeaway tips that you can implement straight away.
