Working from Home – Fan or Critic?

As I sit here in my home ‘office’ area, I think about how fortunate I have been to be able to enjoy working from home in a lot of the jobs I have had, especially in the last ten years.

Why is working from home so good?

It’s saved me so much travel time / time sitting in traffic and I feel I can concentrate so much better, away from distractions in a busy office.

In fact, I’ve found I can get so much more work done from home than I ever could from work.

I believe in it so much that as Cornerstone Resources grows, we are determined to be able to offer our team flexible options in the way they work.

Is there any research to prove the benefits?

Stanford have completed a two year study looking at the impact. The study showed a definite increase in productivity when employees worked from home versus the office, equivalent to an additional full day’s work!

The study found there were benefits not just for the employee:

  • employers found it had a positive impact on their retention and sickness absence rates
  • less cars on the road meant a positive environmental impact
  • less overall office space needed could lead to cost savings, meaning a positive impact on the bottom line

Is it for everyone?

It’s not for everyone, you may not be able to do what your job entails from home or you may simply find it harder to motivate yourself at home compared to being in a busy work environment.

In fact, the study found that if someone works from home for a prolonged period of time, it can feel increasingly lonely for them.

I can definitely vouch for this, having gone from being able to work from home one day a week in my last job for a large company to now working from home everyday and having my own business, it’s a big shift and you can feel isolated at times.

To balance the isolation of working from home all the time, I find it helps to get out and meet up with customers and also to go to quality networking events.
