Apprenticeship training – what are the benefits?

In this great article from The Telegraph, the Head of Learning & Development at Centrica tries to dispel a few myths around apprenticeships. In it, he talks about the benefits they have brought to the business.

Who can join an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships aren’t necessarily just for someone at the beginning of their working life. Increasingly, they can be a great route for someone looking for a career change.

They are not too difficult to set up. Over the last few years the Government and the National Apprenticeship Service have made the sourcing of apprenticeship training much more straightforward..

In the article, Centrica report that they have seen a 7% increase in productivity and a 6% increase in staff loyalty by introducing the apprenticeship scheme. This is because their employees appreciate the investment they are making in them.

How can it work for me?

It’s an excellent opportunity to develop your employees. It can help reduce the number of people leaving your organisation and bring more skills and experience in to your business. What’s even better is that you can get government funding to cover some of the cost of training and assessing an apprentice!

If you have a wage bill of under £3 million a year, you only pay 5% of the total cost of the apprenticeship. The rest of the bill is paid for by the Government. So in return for a salary that can be as little as £3.90 for a first year apprentice, you can get a great deal of knowledge in your organisation.

Training time

Just remember that 20% of the apprentices time must be reserved for learning. That 20% can encompass all Company training, mentoring, coaching as well as classroom based learning. It also doesn’t need to be one day a week. Instead it can be dedicated blocks of learning so you can fit it round your peak periods of activity. Therefore our view is that apprenticeships are therefore a great way to upskill your workforce!
